Long tap the paired bluetooth device and select options. Select media.
Android now supports stereo bluetooth too. Use Google Listen to get audio you like.

    When I try this with my g1 and a motorola bluetooth headpiece there is no “media” option. Is it specific to the device?

    Yes it is specific to a device. Car audios with bluetooth support this to listen to the music on your phone.
