Locate music dir on the SD card (create it if not found)
Create three directories, ringtone, notification, alarms in it.
Any music files placed in these directories will appear in their respective menus.
May have to reboot the phone so they can be seen and picked.
You can also long press on a song in the songs list in the music player to add it to the ringtones.
Use Ringdroid to cut a song and use it as a ringtone.

THANKS!
I have the new Atrix 4G. I did not get a SD card with it. Any other suggestions to move a file to ringtones?
I’m on an LG Optimus, and this doesn’t seem to be working. Has the system changed? I’d love to add some ringtones from original recordings (i.e. I can’t buy them).
I wasn’t successful until I had the subfolders named “ringtones”, “notifications”, and “alarms”. “notification” did NOT work. It didn’t seem to matter if it was in the root /sdcard/ folder or a subfolder.
sad i hv cheap micromax android no features sadness
I too have this problem with LG Optimus. I created a folder named “Ringtone” and I did cut and paste from my SD card. Alas!! it did not seem to work. However it worked while it was “froyo” v:2.2.2
