Take control of the lock pattern

Use AutoLock to prevent the phone from locking up until you leave it alone for preset number of minutes.
It makes sense to have the phone sleep when you are on a call though, so your cheek doesn’t initiate actions auto magically.
Another app, Shake awake awakes your phone when you shake it during a call. Both these apps put you back in control of the lock pattern.

Use “Nightwatch” to show a bedside clock when its plugged in to the charger/usb port. It also speaks out the time when you touch it.
